So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
The Centerpiece of Christian Life
Can you picture the dinner table on Thanksgiving? You probably see a multitude of dishes loaded with all kinds of food. There are plates and glasses and silverware for the great feast. There may be a tablecloth that accentuates all the tableware. On many tables you’ll even find a decorative centerpiece – an ornamental object intended to give the meal an eye-catching appeal.
What is the centerpiece of Christian life? What is the object with the eye-catching appeal that gives our life a focus and a purpose? What provides the Christian a reason to think, speak, and act in ways that glorify our God? The object of our faith and life is the love of God through his Son Jesus Christ. Although we deserve punishment and eternal death on account of our sins, God sent Jesus to live, die, and rise again to take away our sins and give us the gift of eternal life. Jesus is our centerpiece – he is the reason for our lives now and for eternity.
As the Apostle Paul describes in the passage above, Jesus gives us the motivation to continue to live in him, to be built up and strengthened in our faith in him, to overflow with thankfulness. Consider the day-to-day affairs in life. The love of Christ moves me to put God and his Word first in my list of priorities. The love of Christ moves me to be loving, kind, and forgiving to people. The love of Christ moves me to glorify God with the time, talents, and earthly possessions he gives me. The love of Christ moves me to have a soft spot in my heart for those without Jesus in their lives. The love of Christ gives me a reason to be thankful and joyful in spite of the troubles and challenges I face. Jesus is truly the centerpiece of my life.
