Put God First in Your Life

“You shall have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:3

Have you ever heard anyone say, “Well, today I worshiped my idol again”? Idolatry is a severe human problem.  God used the very first of his Ten Commandments to forbid it.  But the essence of idolatry is that people are absolutely convinced that they are trusting and confiding in something true and rock-solid.  Idolatry is always blind.

Which means that you might be hip-deep in it right now.  An idol is the controlling force, the decision-making factor in your life.  Do you need your friends more than God?  Is your money more precious than your divine forgiveness?  Is your life more focused around all the pleasures and leisure activities this world can produce than the pleasure of God’s company in worship?  What, honestly, is the most important thing in your life right now?

A young man came to Jesus once and asked him what he had to do to inherit eternal life.  Simple.  Jesus told him to sell everything he had and to give it to the poor.  This young man went away crushed because he was rich, and being rich was more important to him than Jesus.  He thought he knew what was important.  He left with the empty promises and shattered dreams of a false god.

Is there anything more important than our Savior?  Is there?  Is there anything more precious than the forgiveness that Jesus offers to sinners like us?  Is there anything more joyful than knowing that Jesus’ love for us is unconditional and unlimited?  Is there anything more amazing than knowing that Jesus will raise us from the dead on the last day and welcome us personally into paradise everlasting?  No, there isn’t.

And there isn’t any excuse we can give or rationalize to place God in second place in the context of our lives.  Whatever is keeping us from giving our whole heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit to the Lord is an idol and must go. Today would be a good day to get rid of it!

There is only one true God.  And there isn’t a day, a moment, that goes by in our lives that God hasn’t lavished us with his love and embraced us with his mercy.   “You shall have no other gods before me” is the first and greatest commandment according to Jesus, and our first and greatest response to our true and loving God.

Putting God first in our lives with you,
